Born in California, Stephanie Maxwell is a prestigious abstract animator now teaching at Rochester's Institute of Technology's School of Film and Animation. Her animation process is a mix of direct on film animation using 35mm film, and digital manipulation using a feed camera. Stephanie Maxwell's first film Ga (1982) stayed close to direct animation etching on film, but she quickly began to incorporate digital manipulation into her later work, incorporating techniques such as changing color, physical film manipulation or zooming in on specific aspects of the shot to convey a structured spontaneity.
